What is the recipe for success in education communities?

Finding ways to learn from our shared experiences to build stronger and connected communities.

For the launch of the activating community-led digital skills project we used our experience building education and research communities to create the community building e-module.

We reflected on elements of the e-module at the Powered by People event at UCLAN, on the 30 June to encourage conversation about the reality of community building across further and higher education.

The magic ingredients

The workshop facilitated small group discussions to explore eight ingredients that build community. Each element had reflection cards with question prompts to help us unpack how they are connected leading to communities that provide care and support.

  • The community is established from a genuine need and creates value.
  • It has a unique proposition and offers something different.
  • There is a clear purpose and direction.
  • Community leadership take the initiative.
  • People know the community exist.
  • Members build trust and connections easily.
  • It adapts to change.
  • There are minimal barriers to the tools and technology used.

The challenges

Getting buy in to develop skills and community was a hot topic during discussions. From lecturers to leadership, time is poor and when people are struggling with high demands having time to explore is not always possible. But when a community’s purpose and activities are clear, this is when they provide a lifeline. When people know what to expect pockets of excellence can shine to give others practical tips and insights.

Community must also balance the fine line between having people who steer its direction and take the lead while not being too rigid and formalised. The most successful communities adapt and grow organically. They start with small conversations or projects of passionate people then grow by focusing on hot topics and demands.

Freedom to experiment is another concern. Whether in the classroom or with communities that deal with sensitive topics.

The reality

When digital feels separate to so many conversations, finding the common threads between projects, teams and conversations is key. This is where community is vital. Equally knowing when community is finite and has serviced its purpose helps make the time it is alive worthwhile.

Community still needs to help reach those people who are struggling and hiding. This is why hosting events like this and encouraging more conversation is critical.

The recipe for success in education communities workshop moved beyond just theory to encourage people to reflect and share perspectives to help people take action.

If you are interested in community building explore the e-module and contact us if you would like support for your community idea.
